Improving local community’s livelihoods and engagement in sustainable forest and land management in Thailand consultation meeting

From the consultation meeting held among the coordinators from the Department of Land Development, IUCN officials, officials from the relevant agencies in the area, and local communities, the following important issues have been identified:1. There will be changes in the target area, with activities to be carried out in the western region, which includes approximately 260 target groups.2. The implementation plan has been adjusted since receiving the budget on July 16, 2023. Therefore, we will be able to commence the activities according to the plan. Hence, we request to modify the plan as per the attached document.3. Engage in coordination and fieldwork.

Present plans and guidelines for enhancing the quality of life in local communities in Nan Province Meeting

Nan Province holds an operational meeting to present plans and guidelines for enhancing the quality of life in local communities in Nan Province. On September 11, 2023, at the Nan Golden Water Hotel in Mueang District, Nan Province, Mr. Kritsaphat Petcharabunin, the Deputy Governor of Nan Province, presides over the operational meeting to present plans and guidelines for implementing the Project of improving the quality of life in local communities in Nan Province. The project aims to develop sustainable land and forest management practices at the local level to achieve the national goal of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and forestry sectors.A total of 27 government, state, and private sector organizations have participated in this initiative. The project has been initiated with support from the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) and aims to establish a model for sustainable land and forest management at the local level, starting in Nan Province. Various stakeholders from different sectors have come together to collaborate, learn, and work towards a common goal. The project focuses on restoring degraded forest areas and land to promote sustainable land management in agriculture and develop sustainable land use practices to halt land degradation. This initiative also aims to increase community involvement, including local government agencies and stakeholders, in promoting sustainable agriculture and forestry to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the agriculture and forestry sectors.To outline the project plans and operational guidelines, the Regional Land Development Office 7 organized this meeting, which includes discussions on plans, guidelines, and knowledge exchange to establish a framework for the development of agricultural and forest areas in the local community of Pa Laew Luang Sub-District, Sansuk District, Nan Province. The focus is on developing agricultural and forest areas that provide sustainable livelihoods and income for the community while emphasizing development in harmony with environmental conservation and restoration of degraded forests, ultimately creating sustainable and enduring forests.

Enhance knowledge in agriculture and forestry in the area of the National Land Policy (The Kor Tor Chor: KTC) , Nan Province.

On Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 09:30 a.m., Mr. Anuwat Phothinam, Deputy Director for Operations of the Land Development Department, in his capacity as the Director of the Center of Excellence on Soil Research in Asia (CESRA), chaired the opening ceremony of the operational workshop "Enhancing Knowledge in Agriculture and Forestry in the area of the National Land Policy (The Kor Tor Chor: KTC), Tambon Pa Laew Luang, Santisuk District, Nan Province." This workshop was held under the financial support of AFoCo. Also present were Mr. Jamreun Nakkhong, Director of the Research and Development Division, Mr. Enak Deepromkul, Director of the Land Development Office, Region 7, Dr.Bunjirluk Jintaridth, CESRA Consultant and AFoCo Project Coordinator, Ms. Chatnapa Promlorongwan, Director of Nan Land Development Station. Officials from international organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Royal Forest Department (RFD), and local farmers also attended the meeting.The objective of this meeting is to foster awareness in agriculture and provide sustainable land and forest management strategies for the area of the National Land Policy(The Kor Tor Chor: KTC), Tambon Pa Laew Luang, Sanitsuk District, Nan Province, on a local level, benefiting farmers under the project to improve the quality of local community life through sustainable reforestation and land management. Additionally, it aims to foster collaboration among the Department of Land Development, the Royal Forest Department, CESRA , local authorities, and relevant farmers for integrated area development in Tambon Pa Laew Luang, Santisuk District, Nan Province, to achieve the balanced goal of national land resource management (LDN), reduce agricultural land degradation, and address ongoing greenhouse gas emissions issues from both agricultural and forestry sectors.The meeting is divided into two sessions, held over 2 days, with Session 1 on March 14, 2024 and Session 2 on March 15, 2024. More than 200 participants, including officials from government agencies, private sector representatives, and local farmers, attended the meeting held at the Santisuk Agricultural Cooperative Meeting Hall, Du Phong Subdistrict, Sanitsuk District, Nan Province.
